Melasma

Melasma is ill-defined patches of hyperpigmentation of the skin and occurring primarily on the face. Melasma is thought to be caused by a combination of sun exposure, genetic predisposition, hormone changes, and skin irritation. Although it can affect anyone, it is more common in women, especially pregnant women and those who are taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy medications.  Melasma is usually a chronic condition that requires multiple different treatments to improve and control.
